Training & Competance In Anaesthesia For Plastic Surgery & Burns

Response to RCA request for information from the Plastic Surgery & Burns Anaesthetists group.

 

Generalist practice

For all anaesthetic trainees including those who might wish to do 1 - 2 Plastic Surgical sessions per week as a consultant

Specialist practice

For those wishing to work in a large Plastic Surgery & Burns Unit

6 months ITU at intermediate level for specialist practice in Burns

   

Additional training in paediatric anaesthesia & PICU

Competencies

Assessed by observation of patient management by consultants locally

Knowledge

To have the knowledge to undertake any of the above list of target cases independently

To have the knowledge to undertake any of the above list of target cases independently

Skills

To have the skill to manage any of the above cases independently

Attitudes

To have the attitudes expected of all consultants & defined in recent documents

Eg Consultant 2000; Duties of a Doctor etc

Service Standards

   

Resources

Most easily delivered in larger specialised unit with >12 plastic & hand surgical lists. However training opportunities in DGH’s & TH’s with fewer plastics list are valuable experience & may make up part of the overall exposure.

Must be delivered in a larger specialist units with > 6 Cons Plastic Surgeons & > 12 Plastic Surgical operating lists per week.

Plastic surgical subspecialties including

Burns; Clefts; Hands; Head & Neck etc

   

Burns Unit with

> 6 beds

separate burns theatre

access to Intensive care for burns either in Burns Unit or general ITU

adults & children

Other trained personnel

Plastic surgeons

Plastic Surgeons

Specialist nurses in Plastic Surgery & Burns including Burns ITU

Specialist therapists

Psychology service

Other facilities

As for any anaesthetic department

Supervision

Consultant anaesthetist on call at all times

Supervision in theatre by consultant >50% of the time

>6 fixed consultant sessions per SpR

Anaesthetic consultants with a special responsibility for Plastic Surgery & Burns on call at all times.

Supervision in theatre by a consultant >50% of the time

> 6 fixed consultant anaesthetic sessions per SpR

Assessment

Use the standard assessment process of the local School of Anaesthesia

One case presentation per 3 months

Use the standard assessment process of the local School of Anaesthesia

3 extended case summaries per 6 months

Case load

Dependant on the number of Plastic Surgical lists

Dependant on the number of Plastic Surgical lists & whether there is a Burns Unit

Casemix

 

Dependant on the number of Plastic Surgical lists,

subspecialties available & whether there is a Burns Unit
